The area that is today the country of Russia has been inhabited by people for thousands of years. In 862 AD, the earliest modern state in Russia was founded by King Rurik of the Rus, who later conquered the city of Kiev and started the Kievan Rus Kingdom. During the 10th and 11th century the Kievan Rus Empire emerged as one of the greater powers in Europe. The empire was at its peak during the rule of Vladimir the Great and Yaroslav I the Wise. However, Batu Khan led Mongols decimated the Kievan Rus empire in the 13th century. Later on in the 14th century the Grand Duchy of Moscow came to power and became the head of the Eastern Roman Empire and during this period Ivan the Terrible crowned himself as the first Tsar of Russia in 1547 AD.
The Romanov dynasty developed by Mikhail Romanov in 1613 AD ruled over Russia for many years. Tsar Peter the Great (1689-1725) helped in the expansion of Russian empire, he even moved the capital from Moscow to St. Petersburg. The Russian people fought against the Autocracy of the Tsars. Vladimir Lenin was the key figure who led the Bolshevik Party in revolution and ended the rule of Tsars in Russia. After the Civil war of 1918, Linen's side won and the Soviet Union emerged in 1922 AD.
