How to reach Egypt

Traveling to Egypt by Air
The main airports in Egypt are Cairo International Airport and Luxor International Airport. The other major airports are Aswan, Alexandria, and Sharm El Sheikh. Non-stop flights are available, with most of them landing at Cairo International Airport. There are numerous daily flights to Egypt from major Indian cities such as Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, and Kolkata to name a few. Egypt has two international airports – in Cairo and Luxor.

The Cairo International Airport is the primary airport and it is situated in Heliopolis, around 15 km from the center of the city. As the second busiest airport in Africa, it witnesses more than 16 million passengers in a year.

Various international airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss, Etihad, and its own national carrier Egypt Air serve the airport. The airport has three terminals and there’s a free shuttle bus to transport you between Terminal 2 and 3. From the airport, you can take a taxi, Uber, or a bus to reach the city. The other international airport in Egypt is in Luxor although this airport is mostly used for domestic flights and charters. This is a much smaller airport and thus lacks several conveniences. However, you can reach the city once you land here using taxis.

Places to Visit in Egypt

Egypt is the site of one of the oldest civilizations in the world which dates back to 5500 BC, and boasts some of the most amazing places to visit in Egypt.

Pyramids of Giza
The three pyramids, which house the tombs of ancient pharaohs, are one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. Located on the Giza Plateau, the pyramids are the only Wonder to have remained intact over thousands of years.

The Great
Pyramids of Giza, also known as the Pyramid of Khufu, is 138 meters high and is open to tourists via the Robber’s Tunnel. The limestone Sphinx structure is also part of the same complex. The pyramids complex of Giza is the gem of Egypt vacation spots and one of the most famous Egypt touring places.

Valley of Kings, Luxor
Located on the East bank of the river Nile, Luxor was the site of the ancient city of Thebes and is one of the most popular Egypt tourist spots. Hailed as the world’s largest open-air museum, Luxor is best known for the Valley of Kings which houses rock-cut tombs of ancient pharaohs. Famous ancient kings such as Tutankhamun and Amenhotep were buried here.

Although there are about 63 tombs that have been excavated, only a small number are open to tourists. Tutankhamun's tomb called the KV62, has different entry charges.

Islamic Cairo
The Islamic Cairo district in the capital of Egypt is filled with medieval mosques, monuments, and madrassas, and is one of the foremost Egypt tourist attractions. The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is an impressive example and a visible reminder of the Islamic heritage of this beautiful city.

If you delve deep into the part near the walled city, you can also find workshops and artisan families that have worked there for a millennium, making it one of the best places to visit in Egypt.

Citadel of Saladin
One of the many places in ancient Egypt to be declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the citadel was built by the famous Ayyubid ruler Saladin to protect Cairo and Fustat (the main Egyptian capital under the Caliphate) against Crusaders.

The huge fortification is lined by several watchtowers and houses several stunning mosques and the Well of Joseph inside. The Al-Naseer, Sulayman Pasha and the Al Gawhara Palace exhibition hall are three places that are an absolute necessity for Egypt tour visits in Cairo.

Egyptian Museum
The ancient cities of Egypt have been excavated to reveal temples, palaces, and tombs that are thousands of years old, and you may wonder where all the fabled treasure went. After all, the Egyptians were famous for burying their dead with all kinds of things – gold, golden artifacts, books, and so on. Worry not, because the Egyptian Museum is that dream come true.

The pyramids tell you only half the story, the other half is housed in this biggest Egypt collection in the world, including the famous excavation of the tomb of Tutankhamun, making it one of the most stunning places to visit in Egypt.

Things to do in Egypt

You can explore a lot of places to see and learn about Egyptian culture, and also let yourself indulge in a lot of fun and educational things to do in Egypt.

Hurghada – Go Scuba Diving
The Red Sea shoreline of Egypt is renowned for the town of Hurghada, which offers heaps of fun activities in Egypt in December. The dazzling scene here, complete with coral reefs, completely clear waters, and sandy shores makes for the ideal spot for plunging and swimming. There are bunches of exercises in Egypt that you can take part in, however, this is amazing. We believe your excursion would be incomplete without a visit to the Grand Aquarium in Hurghada.

Giza – Learn To Make Papyrus
One of the Egyptian civilization’s greatest achievements was the invention of paper. Specifically, they made writing material out of pulp derived from the papyrus tree that still grows along the Nile. At the Papyrus Institute in Giza (which is where the Pyramids are), visitors are enthralled with a demo of the way we believe the ancient Egyptians made paper. Interestingly, papyrus is one of the most popular things to buy in Egypt, and you can easily get your hands on papyrus souvenirs here to make your Egypt trip memorable.

Egyptian Museums – Take A Guided Tour
Witnessing the ruins of ancient temples, tombs, and pyramids from the ancient civilization is hands down one of the most important things to do in Cairo, Egypt. This museum houses the biggest collection of artifacts recovered from the ruins, like all the cursed gold of Tutankhamun’s tomb actual mummies, and about 165,000 other artifacts. However, one of the ways to make this museum trip better is to hire a guide to show you around. Trust us, there is no better museum in the world for ancient history, and spending money on a guide will only add to the memories.

Islamic Cairo – Shop for Leather, Jewels, And Perfumes
Behind the walled city lies what used to be the heart of the Islamic empire in Egypt. While there are stunning mosques that will delight the history and art lovers, there is also the world’s oldest shopping center on the streets of Islamic Cairo. You can take a walking tour by yourself of this place, and buy loads of oriental jewelry, leather bags, and even Egyptian Ittar and aromatic spices, which is surely one of the most enjoyable things to do in Cairo at night. Your bargaining skills will help a lot here, as there is no way to say how much the item is worth.

Giza – Go Camel Riding At Sunset
One of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the pyramids inspire awe. That’s why riding into the sunset at Giza makes it to every list of Egypt things to do. The pyramids are on the Giza Plateau, at the edge where the dunes of the Sahara begin showing. Hire a camel or horse for one-, two-, and four-hour rides in the sand that engulfs the pyramids from one side. At sunset, visitors can witness the pyramids and golden sands in a light that is seldom seen by tourists or even captured in photos. This is one of the most romantic things to do in Egypt.

Best time to visit Egypt

Tourists can travel to Egypt throughout the year, just keep in mind that the summer months here can be very warm. The best time to visit Egypt is between September and April.

Summer (May-August)
Even though the temperature in Egypt is usually high, summer is the worst in comparison to other seasons. Particularly when the temperatures in winter run between 33-21 degrees, summer months can be super-hot in Egypt between May and August, and the most extreme temperature is around 36 degrees, and the least is around 23 degrees. So, make sure you carry plenty of sunscreen, your shades, and water bottles. There is little to no rainfall during this time. Hence the weather can be quite harsh and dry.

Winter (October - February)
Winters, in the Nile Delta Region and Cairo, can be very cool, particularly around evening time, so ensure you carry a light coat. Southern Egypt stays warm in any event, during winters. However, the temperature may drop at night. Winters are the best season to visit Egypt. The travel industry in Egypt is booming this time so ensure you plan, or else you may battle to discover great convenience and may need to pay more for airfare.
