Double Decker Living Root Bridges.jpg

Double Decker Living Root Bridges

Located at 15kms from Cherrapunjee,  the Double Decker Root Bridge is a living root bridge located at Nongriat village near Cherrapunji in Meghalaya.  The descent to the Nongriat double-decker root bridge is an epic one. Begin at the tip of the valley close to the village of Tyrna and climb down approximately 3000 steps. On the way, there are plenty of stunning vistas and natural sights to soak in.

The root bridges of Meghalaya are an enigma, an integral part of the old Khasi lifestyle that dates back to the times when trekking through thick forests and negotiating fast-flowing rivers was a part of the routine. Nongriat’s double-decker root bridge is unique because of its multi-level formation – it took years for these beautiful examples of botanical architecture to develop. The whole idea of Meghalaya’s living bridges came into the picture some two centuries ago (180 years precisely) when veterans of Khasi clan living in Meghalaya put rubber tree roots into hollow canes of Areca nut palm that met halfway across the stream. The roots were nurtured and cared properly until they grew enough to reach the opposite bank, get completely entwined with each other, and make themselves capable enough to carry heavy weight.

There are some pools nearby surrounded with rocks where you can sit and relax – the neatly maintained food stalls will ensure that you will not be famished after your journey.

The Nongriat root bridges require a certain level of fitness to reach.

Some Interesting Facts :

1. The Living Root Bridges are made from rubber tree roots also known as Ficus elastica tree. Some of the root bridges are over 100 feet long and take 10 to 15 years to attain the perfect shape.

Once fully grown, these roots last for as long as 500 years. While some of the roots decay because of their continuous association of water, others grow and make up for the decayed, thus providing the required stability to the bridge.

2.  All the Living Root Bridges in Meghalaya, the double-decker root bridge in Cherrapunji and the single-decker root bridge in Shillong are the unique bridges in the world and make for prime attraction in the Northeast.

3. Living Root Bridge in Meghalaya is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
