Elephant waterfalls
Elephant falls in Meghalaya is a beautiful tourists destination in north east india. The waterfall is located in Upper Shillong area within the Eastern Air Command of Indian Air Force. The Khasi tribe named it Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew, meaning Three Steps Waterfalls. Britishers named it Elephant Falls during their regime owing to the presence of an elephant-shaped rock on one side of the fall. However, the rock was destroyed due to an earthquake in 1897. Located quite close to Shillong Peak, the Elephant Falls is a 3 tier waterfall. The first fall is very broad and is hidden among the trees. The second fall is quite domesticated and in the winters (and drier months) it looks inconsequential. The third fall is the tallest and most spectacular with crystal clear water falling over sharp rocks of myriad shapes.
One need to navigate down a steep flight of 150 steps to reach the waterfall and these steps are troublesome for kids and aged people. There are benches around the first tier of the waterfall and the second one where one can sit and relax. Also, there are food stalls and lots of handicraft selling corners as well. It looks fantastic when sun rays fall on it and the water shines brightly like a jewel. This waterfall is a popular picnic spot in Meghalaya where people come to spend some quality time with their loved ones. It can be visited throughout the year but it holds a different charm during monsoon.
