Ateshgah_Fire_Temple_.jpg

Ateshgah - Fire Temple

It can be said that the historical architectural reserve – the Fire Temple – Ateshgah is situated in the center of the Absheron Peninsula in Surakhani settlement (now it is called Amirjan). The temple is situated in a place where from the ancient times until the XIX century natural gas oozed out of the surface being a reason of the Eternal Flames phenomenon. Historical roots of the temple go to the ancient centuries when Zoroastrianism was a ruling religion. About the construction of the first Ateshgah temple proclaims Mobed Mobedan’s writing on the “Kaaba of Zoroastr” (III century A.D.), which also informs that he founded sacred temples in Transcaucasia region and assigned the priests to serve there. Arab geographer Estakhri in 930 in his “The ways of states” book mentioned that not far from Baku, the settlements of Zoroastrians were existed. But eventually when Islam was asserted as the main religion in Azerbaijan local people desisted to visit the fire temples including Ateshgah which later had been decayed. Centuries have passed, the Great Silk Road and trade connections of medieval centuries which passed through Azerbaijan connected again the Zoroastrians with the Ateshgah shrine after change of many generations. Traders who visited Azerbaijan after arriving to their homelands talked a lot about the unique phenomenon they had seen – appearance of flames on a ground. So, from the beginnings of the XVII century flow of pilgrims appeared in Surakhani. According to the German traveler E. Kaempfer which visited Azerbaijan in 1683: from the middle of XVII century pilgrims started to rebuild the temple again. In the beginnings of the XIX century the temple received the form which is represented today without any changes. The temple’s plan is five corner complex with an entrance portal surrounded with battlement type walls.

Yanardag-The-Burning-Mountain-1.jpg

Visit to Yanardag - Fire Mountain

"Fire Mountain" - "Yanardag"  a mountain on Absheronpeninsula , 25 km from north of Baku. Literally, word "Yanardag" means "Blazing mountain". Blazing bodies of flame dance on stones and floor.  Yanar dag is a natural gas fire which blazes continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula.
In the 13th century, when Marco Polo visited the then-Persian city of Baku, he mentioned numerous mysterious flames that could be found all over the region at various places of the Abseron Peninsula. These fires gave Azerbaijan the moniker “Land of Fire.” Even five centuries after Marco Polo, French writer Alexandre Dumas witnessed natural flames in a mysterious fire temple.

One can easily understand how these natural flames must have amazed and terrified people in history, and it doesn’t come as a surprise that the natural fires of Azerbaijan are considered to have played a crucial part in the creation of Zoroastrianism — a mystical faith, centered around ceremonial fire cults, which appeared in the region around 2,000 years ago.

The natural flames of Azerbaijan can be attributed to its enormous gas reserves. When exploitation of these reserves began, most of the natural fires burned out, due to a reduction in underground pressure. Of the natural fires that burn today in Azerbaijan, Yanar Dag is arguably the most impressive.

A 10m long wall of fire, that never extinguishes, is burning continuously alongside the edge of the hill, which naturally is at its most spectacular at night, when tourists and locals alike view the fire from a nearby teahouse. Local lore states that it was a shepherd that accidentally ignited the fire in the 1950s by tossing a cigarette, and that it has burnt ever since.
