Queen’s Place (entrance fees will be applicable)

The Rova of Antananarivo /'ru?v?/ (Malagasy: Rovan'i Manjakamiadana ['ruv?n man?dzak?mi'ad??n?]) is a royal palace complex (rova) in Madagascar that served as the home of the sovereigns of the Kingdom of Imerina in the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as of the rulers of the Kingdom of Madagascar in the 19th century. Its counterpart is the nearby fortified village of Ambohimanga, which served as the spiritual seat of the kingdom in contrast to the political significance of the Rova in the capital. Located in the central highland city of Antananarivo, the Rova occupies the highest point on Analamanga, formerly the highest of Antananarivo's many hills. Merina king Andrianjaka, who ruled Imerina from around 1610 until 1630, is believed to have captured Analamanga from a Vazimba king around 1610 or 1625 and erected the site's first fortified royal structure. Successive Merina kings continued to rule from the site until the fall of the monarchy in 1896, frequently restoring, modifying or adding royal structures within the compound to suit their needs.

Lemur’s Park ( optional)

You'll find nine species of lemur at this private reserve, 22km west of the capital. It's a good place to visit if you haven't yet seen lemurs elsewhere, or if you need one final lemur fix before you go! The lemurs are free-ranging (except for the two nocturnal species, which are confined to rather small cages) and well habituated, so you'll see them up close. There are about 50 individual lemurs including Coquerel sifakas, ring-tail lemurs and black-and-white ruffed lemurs.

Most of the animals are former pets or individuals that were threatened in their natural habitat, and the reserve has a breeding program together with other private sanctuaries.

Nestled on a bend of the River Katsaoka, the 5-hectare park is a beautiful and tranquil spot. The park can arrange transfers from Tana if you don't have your own vehicle: it costs Ar140,000 per person (minimum of two people) return for one/two people, including admission. Call ahead to arrange – they leave Tana at 9am and return at 2pm.

These markets are typically found in urban centers like Antananarivo, the capital, and in tourist hotspots such as Nosy Be, Tulear, and Antsirabe. The markets are buzzing with activity, offering a unique opportunity to experience the island's craftsmanship, local goods, and traditional Malagasy art.

Key Features of Artisan Markets in Madagascar:

Handmade Crafts: The products sold at these markets are often made using traditional techniques passed down through generations. This includes handwoven baskets, wooden carvings, colorful textiles, beaded jewelry, and intricate hand-painted items.

Natural Materials: Many of the crafts are made from locally sourced natural materials such as raffia, coconut shells, rosewood, and silk from Malagasy silkworms, reflecting a deep connection to the island's resources.

Cultural Significance: The items sold in these markets often have cultural or spiritual significance, with designs that reflect Malagasy history, beliefs, and customs. For example, traditional clothing, jewelry, and masks are frequently found, each with its own symbolism.

Vibrant Atmosphere: The markets are lively, with sellers and buyers often negotiating prices. It's common to see a mix of local Malagasy people and tourists visiting the markets. The sights, sounds, and smells of street food, music, and vibrant fabrics create a sensory overload.

Popular Souvenirs: Common souvenirs include handmade wooden figurines, embroidered clothing, local spices, essential oils, and natural beauty products. Malagasy vanilla and traditional rum are also popular items for tourists.

Support for Local Communities: Purchasing goods from these markets often directly supports the local artisans and communities, providing them with a vital source of income. Many artisans also work in cooperatives to improve their craft and preserve traditional skills.

Market Locations: Some of the most popular artisan markets in Madagascar include:

Digue Market in Antananarivo: A well-known market for traditional Malagasy products.

Zoma Market: A bustling market in the capital, with a variety of goods, including arts and crafts.
