Float Plane at Lake Rotorua

In the middle of Lake Rotorua is Mokoia Island which is considered as one of New Zealand's most famous setting for love stories. This marvelously peaceful lake has a violent history. In the Rotorua region, one of several large volcanoes has their underlying magma chambers which were collapsed after a massive eruption around 200,000 years ago. The collapse created a circular caldera about 16 kilometers wide, which filled with water to form the North Island's second largest lake.
Geothermal activity continues below and around Lake Rotorua. Clouds of steam drift around the shore and the water has high sulphur content, resulting in a magical green-blue coloration. Lake Rotorua has many travel activities with something to suit all ages, tastes and budgets. From adrenaline-pumping adventure to a relaxing day out, you need never be bored in Lake Rotorua.
