Fox Glacier

On coming downwards from the brooding Southern Alps, impassable Fox Glacier seems to flow steadily, gloomily towards the township. But in this delicate landscape it's the glacier that's at risk: despite hints of advance in recent years, this 12km glacier named after former New Zealand PM Sir William Fox has been steadily retreating over the past century. To see the Fox Glacier, you can walk to the terminal face, arrange an ice-hiking adventure or book a sightseeing flight. Here the forces of nature work strongest, building spectacular ice features. Close to Fox Glacier is beautiful Lake Matheson, one of the most photographed lakes in New Zealand.
