    Tshangu Lake 3.jpg

Tshangu Lake - The glacial lake of Sikkim

Tsongmo Lake is surely one of the most beautiful landscapes in Sikkim. On the Gangtok- Nathu La Highway Tsomgo Lake is at an altitude of 12, 400 ft. Also known as Changu Lake.

It is regarded as a very sacred place by the local Buddhists and the Hindus. The lake is the resident of migratory birds and the brahmini ducks.  From winters to mid- May the lake remains frozen. In the summers, Tsongmo derives its placid waters from the melting snow of the mountains around.

Tsomgo is revered as a holy lake by the people of Sikkim. Rides on colourfully decorated yaks and mules are offered at the lake site, which also has a variety of eating stalls serving snacks and beverages. Snowboots and gumboots can be hired here.

The local people are of the opinion that Baba Harbhajan Singh still guards the international boundary India and China. Explore this historic beauty and get a good understanding about the different faiths and religions .

The story behind the temple is sentimental for many. Harbhajan Singh was part of the Punjab Regiment as Sentry. He was posted at the China border as part of the border patrol force. It is said that in October 1968 he disappeared without a trace. People have contemplated and many stories have been doing the rounds. The most popular among them is that he drowned. Harbhajan Singh used to escort mules that carry provisions. He could have fallen in a stream and drowned. A fellow sentry personnel had a dream about him after a few days and asked him to construct a memorial in his name

The sentries build a tombstone and a few years later a temple was built on it. It is believed that Harbhajan Singh’s spirit is still alive. They pray and wish that Harbhajan Singh will protect them when they traverse the difficult terrain.

    Nathula Pass (At Optional)

It was sealed for almost four decades after the People’s Republic of China suppressed a Tibetan uprising in 1959. However, when the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited China in 2003, talks to open this strategic route were resumed. The Nathula Pass, as it stands today, was reopened in 2006 and has, ever since, served as an official Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) point.

    Tibetology & Flower Show

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is a Tibet museum in Gangtok, Sikkim, India, named after the 11th Chogyal of Sikkim, Sir Tashi Namgyal.

Ridge Park is floral heaven. The latter is a flat stretch of road exactly above Gangtok Town and if you’re into floriculture, an hour or two will pass by in the blink of an eye. Sikkim’s weather conditions are conducive to orchid cultivation and you will lose count of the number of varieties you spot at Ridge Park. A gazebo for travellers to rest while walking this stretch is a great addition for those simply wanting to get a feel of Gangtok.

The Annual Orchid Show takes place below the Ridge Park at the Flower Exhibition Centre (FEC). While the greenhouse might look modest in size, once you step in you are lost among a variety of colours. Flowers pop up in every nook and corner.

    Gangtok Ropeway 2.jpg

    Gangtok Ropeway ( Optional )

Ropeway one of the greatest attractions in Gangtok and should not be missed. It's a double-cable zig back ropeway which is operational since December 2003.

The starting point of the ropeway is Deorali Bazar which is situated in the heart of the city and easily accessible by most. The visitors can have a panoramic view of the full Gangtok city while taking a ride in this ropeway. The ropeway also serves to de-congest the city, as people can traverse two parts of the city using the ropeway alone.

The ride will start from Deorali Market and stops at Namnang, which ends at Taashiling. If your luck stays by your side and it is a clear day, you might even catch a view of the mighty Kanchenjunga.

They do not always wait until the cable car is full. But during high tourist season, there are usually long queues and each ride gets full before it starts. And if it gets full, you will struggle to get a vantage point inside the cable car unless you are one of the first to get in.
