Best Time to Visit Sikkim

Sikkim is a year-round destination, but the feel of your trip changes a lot with the season, from flower-filled valleys to snowy viewpoints and misty monsoon hillsides.

Here is a simple guide to help you holiday in Sikkim.

Peak Season: Marchโ€“June & Octoberโ€“Mid December

  • Weather: The weather is pleasant with clear blue skies, comfortable temperatures ranging roughly from 10ยฐC to 25ยฐC, and minimal rainfall. Perfect for outdoor activities like trekking and sightseeing.
  • Crowds: Tourist numbers are high, especially in popular spots.
  • Costs: Higher due to demand. Pre-booking is essential.
  • Best For: First-time visitors, families, trekking, watching blooming flowers in spring, and crystal-clear mountain views in the autumn season.
  • Tip: Book Nathula Pass permits at least 30 days in advance. Slots are limited and sell out instantly during these months. Expect "jalebi-turn" traffic jams on the way to Changu Lake.

Shoulder Season: Late December to February

  • Weather: Freezing. Temperatures drop between -5ยฐC to 7ยฐC. High chance of snowfall in places like Tsomgo Lake, Nathula, and North Sikkim (Lachung).
  • Crowds: Moderate. Crowds spike around Christmas and New Year. However, it decreases in mid-January and February.
  • Costs: Moderate. Hotels often offer off-season discounts (except Dec 20โ€“Jan 5), but you may pay extra for room heaters and snow-chain vehicles.
  • Best For: Snow lovers, honeymooners seeking privacy, and budget travellers (in Jan/Feb).
  • Tip: Stay flexible with your plan. Heavy snowfall can close roads to North Sikkim (Gurudongmar Lake) and Nathula, so keep one extra day in Gangtok just in case.

Off-Peak Season: July to September

  • Weather: Heavy rainfall. Sikkim receives torrential monsoon rains. Fog and mist are common, reducing visibility of peaks.
  • Crowds: Low. Most visitors avoid winter travel because of the extreme cold.
  • Costs: Hotels and flights are usually cheaper. Good for budget travellers who can handle cold weather.
  • Best For: Nature lovers who enjoy lush greenery, photographers chasing waterfalls, and budget backpackers.
  • Tip: Avoid North Sikkim during these months as landslides are frequent and roads can be blocked for days. Stick to Gangtok, Namchi, and Pelling, which have better road connectivity.

How to Reach Sikkim from Major Indian Cities

Getting to Sikkim is easy! While Sikkim has a small airport in Pakyong, most people fly into Bagdogra in West Bengal. From there, you take a beautiful road trip through the mountains, which takes about 4โ€“5 hours.

By Air

  • Bagdogra Airport (IXB): The most reliable option. Connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore. It is a 4 to 5 hour scenic drive to Gangtok.
  • Pakyong Airport (PYG): This airport in Sikkim is just 1 hour from Gangtok. Note: Flights here are frequently cancelled due to weather. We recommend Bagdogra for reliability.
  • Popular airlines that fly to Sikkim are IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Air India.
  • There is also a helicopter service operated by Sikkim Tourism that connects Bagdogra to Gangtok in just 20 minutes. However, it is available during the day, and depends on the weather.

By Road

Travelling to Sikkim by road is by far the most scenic journey. Sikkim is best reached by road through NH-10, a scenic route running along the Teesta River with forests, villages, and mountain views. You can travel by public/ private buses, private cabs, or rental bikes.

  • Bus: Regular buses run between Gangtok and cities like Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Bagdogra, and even Kolkata.
  • Taxi/Private Car: Easily available from nearby cities like Siliguri and NJP. Great for comfort and sightseeing halts.

From Siliguri, you can also find shared jeeps and buses going to various parts of Sikkim, like Gangtok, Namchi, Jorethang, Pelling, and Yuksom. While shared jeeps run frequently during the day, it is safer to avoid travelling after sunset due to hilly roads.

By Train

Travelling to Sikkim by train is the most budget-friendly option. Sikkim does not have its own railway station yet. The nearest major station is New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri, West Bengal, about 130-148 km from Gangtok. New Jalpaiguri is well-connected to big cities like Delhi and Kolkata. From New Jalpaiguri, you can reach Gangtok in 4 to 6 hours by bus, jeep, or taxi.

Other nearby stations include Siliguri Junction and Jalpaiguri, but New Jalpaiguri is the most preferred due to better connectivity.

Top Places to Visit on Your Sikkim Trip

Sikkim offers a mix of lively hill towns, glassy lakes, spiritual monasteries, and peaceful valleys, so a good itinerary balances all of these. Whether you prefer easy walks or more adventure, there is always a base town like Gangtok or Pelling to suit your style.

Here are our must-visit picks for your next Sikkim tour:

Gangtok

The capital city of Sikkim, Gangtok, is at 5410 feet in the Eastern Himalayas. This beautiful hill town blends traditional local culture with a modern lifestyle and offers stunning views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. You can enjoy places like MG Marg, Tashi View Point, Tsomgo Lake, and Ganesh Tok.

Monasteries like Rumtek add a peaceful touch to the city. The ropeway ride gives excellent valley views. Gangtok is also the starting point for North Sikkim and Nathula Pass trips. With clean streets, friendly locals, and organised tourism services, Gangtok is a perfect base for exploring Sikkim.

Nathula Pass

Nathula Pass is a high mountain pass in Sikkim, at 14,140 feet above sea level. It was once part of the ancient Silk Road and connects India with Tibet. At high altitude, the area can be cold and windy even in milder months, so warm clothing and proper acclimatization are important.

Indian travellers need a special permit to visit. It offers a unique patriotic feeling as you see Indian soldiers guarding the border in freezing temperatures. The pass is maintained by the Indian Army and remains closed on certain days like Mondays and Tuesdays and during heavy snowfall.

Yumthang Valley

Yumthang Valley, or the Valley of Flowers, is beautiful and colourful valley in North Sikkim. Situated at 11,693 feet, this place is known for the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, where the flowers bloom in bright red, pink, and purple from late March to May.

The drive from Lachung takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and is filled with scenic mountain views. There are also natural hot springs near the entrance where visitors can take a relaxing dip. The peaceful beauty and colourful landscapes of the valley make it one of the top places to visit in Sikkim.

Pelling

Pelling is at an altitude of 7,200 feet in West Sikkim. It is a beautiful hill town with amazing views of Mount Kanchenjunga and is a top tourist spot after Gangtok. The area blends nature and heritage with attractions like Khecheopalri Lake, Rabdentse Ruins, and ancient monasteries.

Recently, Pelling has gained massive popularity for its glass Skywalk, offering a thrilling view of the valley below. Pelling is also a good base to slow down after busier days in Gangtok while still keeping plenty of sightseeing options.

Gurudongmar Lake

Gurudongmar Lake, at 17,800 feet in North Sikkim, is one of the highest lakes in the world. This sacred lake remains frozen for most of the year, yet a small part of it famously never freezes, which locals believe is a miraculous blessing from Guru Padmasambhava. The water is crystal clear and reflects the surrounding snow-clad mountains like a mirror.

Because the oxygen level is very low, you must be well-acclimatized and should stay at the lake for only 30 to 45 minutes. With its spiritual aura, natural beauty, and serene environment, Gurudongmar Lake is one of the most enchanting places to visit in Sikkim.

Top Things to Do in Sikkim

Sikkim has many fun activities for all visitors. There are lots of things to do in Sikkim that you will enjoy and remember. You can find something interesting whether you like adventure, nature, or culture.

Yak Safari

A yak safari is one of the unique things to do in Sikkim. It is usually done around high-altitude spots such as Tsomgo Lake. The yaks are led by local handlers who ensure your safety, making it a hit with children and adults alike. It is a fun, short ride that offers a unique vantage point of the frozen lake and the surrounding snow-capped mountains.

It is also a great spot to take photos and experience real high-altitude mountain life. The yak ride usually lasts 10โ€“20 minutes and is an affordable, memorable activity that you can enjoy almost all year.

Gondola Ride

Sikkim has several ropeways and viewpoints where you can soak in sweeping Himalayan panoramas without heavy trekking. In Gangtok, the ropeway gives aerial views over the town and valley, while other areas offer sunrise points facing Kanchenjunga. This cable car ride starts from Deorali and takes you up to Tashiling, gliding over the bustling city and dense forests.

The ride is short, lasting about 7 to 10 minutes one way, but the views are spectacular. The ropeway runs daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ticket prices for adults are around Rs. 110, and for children under six years of age are around Rs. 70, while kids below three ride free.

River Rafting

Add a touch of adventure to your spiritual journey with white-water rafting on the Teesta River. The meeting point of the Teesta and Rangeet rivers creates a beautiful and dramatic backdrop for this adventure. The rapids here range from Grade 2 to Grade 4, which means there are options for both beginners and thrill-seekers. While rafting, you will see thick forests, small villages, and amazing views.

Trained guides help you stay safe. They teach you how to paddle before you start. It operates from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and the rafting session often takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on the river flow and weather. The best time for river rafting in Sikkim is from March to May.

Admire the Beautiful Rumtek Monastery in Gangtok

Rumtek Monastery, also known as the Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre, is the biggest and most important monastery in Sikkim. It sits on a hill at 5,500 feet, about 23 km from Gangtok. The architecture is stunning, resembling the original monastery in Tibet, with vibrant murals, intricate woodwork, and a massive golden stupa. You can walk around the main hall, the prayer wheels, and the courtyards.

It is a place to learn about Buddhist culture and enjoy calm surroundings. It is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. Entry fee is โ‚น10, and you must carry a valid photo ID. Remember to follow monastery rules. Dress modestly, be quiet in prayer halls, remove shoes before entering, and check where photography is not allowed.

It sits near the 137-foot Chenrezig Statue and lets you walk on a fully transparent glass floor that hangs over a deep valley. As you look down, you can see the hills, roads, and villages far below, giving you a thrilling feeling of walking in the air.

The site is well-maintained and safe, making it a must-visit for a fear factor photo. The area also has peaceful gardens, viewpoints, prayer halls, and walking paths. Tips for a Hassle-Free Sikkim Trip

  • Permit Documents: Aadhar Card is largely NOT accepted for Sikkim Permits (Nathula/North Sikkim). Always carry your Voter ID card, Driving License, or Passport (along with 4-6 passport photos). Children should carry a School ID/Birth Certificate.
  • Sun Protection: The sun is strong in the mountains, so always use sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and keep a cap or hat on.
  • Respect Local Culture: Sikkim is deeply spiritual. Dress modestly in monasteries and always walk clockwise around Chortens (stupas) and prayer wheels.
  • Carry Cash: ATMs are available in Gangtok and Pelling, but not in remote areas like Lachung and Gurudongmar Lake. Carry enough cash for tips, shopping, and emergencies. Small shops do not accept cards.
  • Motion Sickness: Mountain roads have many sharp turns. Carry tablets if you feel sick. Sit in the front seat. Look at the mountains, not the phone. Eat light food. Keep lemon or ginger candy.
  • Plastic Ban: Sikkim is an organic state. Single-use plastic bottles are banned in many areas (like Lachen). Carry a reusable water bottle.
  • Check Road Conditions: Roads may be closed due to landslides in the monsoon or snow in winter. Check daily with your tour operator. Keep backup plans for weather problems.
  • Responsible Tourism: Buy from local shops. Stay in homestays. Hire local guides. Do not litter or pick flowers. Do not disturb animals. Stay quiet in temples. Keep places clean.

Getting Around in Sikkim

Mountain travel requires sturdy vehicles. Flamingo ensures you travel in safety and comfort.

In Sikkim, you travel mainly by road in cars, jeeps, or small hill-friendly coaches. Distances may seem short, but the winding mountain roads make journeys slower, so it is important to plan your sightseeing with enough time. Mountain roads can be narrow with sharp hairpin turns. Motion sickness tablets are recommended for sensitive travellers.

Helicopter Services are available from Bagdogra to Gangtok (subject to weather) for those who want to skip the road journey.

Our Transportation (Mostly Included in our Packages):

  • Group Tours: You will travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned coach with your group and a dedicated tour manager ( depending on departure dates).
  • Private Tours: You will have your own car (Innova/Xylo/Scorpio) and a local driver at your disposal, offering complete flexibility. Recommended for families and couples.
  • Airport Pickups: We pick you up from the airport in Sikkim and drop you off at your pre-booked hotel.

Note: Vehicles included in our packages can only be used as per the planned schedule. Any extra use, additional kilometres, or extra hours will cost more at the agreed rates.
