Temple of Heaven

What Is the Temple of Heaven in Beijing?

The Temple of Heaven (Tiantan Park) is an iconic symbol of imperial China and one of the most culturally significant Places to Visit in China. Located in southern Beijing, it is a vast complex comprising numerous structures and is even larger than the Forbidden City. Built during the Ming dynasty, it was used by Chinese emperors to perform annual ceremonies praying for good harvests and harmony between heaven and earth. Although, it is a famous historic site, it is now a lively park. You will see a cool mix of quiet, grand altars where emperors once prayed, right next to locals having fun practising Tai Chi, flying kites, and playing music.

Why Is the Temple of Heaven Famous?

Travellers visit the Temple of Heaven not only for its architecture but also for the ancient belief behind it - that heaven is round and the earth is square.

  • Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests: The most iconic structure in the complex, this circular wooden hall was built without a single nail. Its three-tiered roof and deep blue tiles symbolize heaven and are among the finest examples of classical Chinese architecture.
  • The Echo Wall: A smooth circular wall surrounding the Imperial Vault of Heaven. If two people stand at opposite ends and whisper, the sound travels clearly along the wall to the other side.
  • Circular Mound Altar: An open-air platform where the Emperor would offer sacrifices to Heaven, on the day of the Winter Solstice each year. The design is mathematically precise, focused on the number nine (the imperial number).
  • Danbi Bridge: A 360-meter-long raised walkway that connects the main buildings, offering a great elevated view of the complex.

  • Walking space: Wear comfortable shoes as the grounds are large
  • Photography: Morning light offers the best views of the main halls
  • Test the Acoustics: If you want to try the Echo Wall, go very early. Once the crowds arrive, the background noise makes it hard to hear the whispers.
