Geography in Venice

Venice is situated in the northern part of Italy, at the north-western end of the Adriatic Sea. It lies on the archipelago of the crescent shaped Venice Lagoon. The sandbanks that protect the shallow waters of the lagoon have three openings that lead into the sea city of Venice. Some of the settlements and buildings here are centuries old. Venice is unique topographically, environmentally and architecturally. The 180 canals have been linked together to form a strong water network on either side of the curving Grand Canal and the best way of transportation in Venice is the gondola – unique flat-bottomed, keel-less boats. Venice was the greatest seaport in medieval Europe and the continent’s long time connector with Asia. It still continues to be a major Italian port in the northern Adriatic Sea.
