Geography in Istanbul

Of all things that are special in Istanbul, the most special is its strategic location, very important even in the commercial sense. It is a bridge between the continents of Europe and Asia, two very distinct lands. They not only meet in Istanbul but also blend and meld beautifully. To the south of Istanbul is the Marmara Sea and to the north is the Black Sea – both seas are connected by the natural strait of Bosphorus. The Western part of the city is in Europe and the Eastern in Asia. Thus, Istanbul is the land where the East meets West and the seas bring North and South together. Istanbul has been a significant seaport since ancient times. The European part of the city is hilly while the central is a tableland. Along the coastline, the land is low and fertile.
