Kyichu Lhakhang is said to be one of 108 temples founded by Songsten Gampo in the 7th century across Tibet and the borderland.
One of Bhutan's oldest temples was allegedly designed to prevent the spread of Buddhism through Tibet by a giant female ogre. Kyichu Lhakhang (also known as Lho Kyerchu or Kyerchu) is a magnificent seventh-century temple revered as one of Bhutan's most beautiful places of worship.
The temple was built by Tibetan Buddhist King Songstsen Gampo to combat the giant ogress that lay across Tibet and the Himalayas, preventing Buddhism from spreading. The temple is thought to have been built by the king at the left foot of the massive ogress.
