Planning your dream Europe trip this year, maybe riding the cable car at Mount Titlis, exploring Paris, or enjoying gelato in Rome? Before planning your holiday in Europe or getting ready to travel, make sure you have the required visa in place.

Now, most of us search for Europe visa requirements since that is the basic thing we always relate to – like if travelling to Dubai, then Dubai Visa. But a visa for Europe is known as the Schengen Visa.

A Schengen visa lets Indian travellers visit multiple European countries with one visa. But not all European countries are part of the Schengen Area. So, your visa requirements depend on your itinerary. Knowing the difference can help you avoid paperwork hassles and delays.

This blog explains the key Europe visa requirements for Indian travellers in 2026, when to apply, what documents are generally needed, and what to know if your itinerary covers multiple Schengen countries.

Do Indians Need a Visa to Visit Europe?

europe visit visa

Yes. Indian passport holders generally need a Schengen visa for Indians to visit any of the Schengen countries for tourism, business, or family visits, even for a short trip.

A short-stay Schengen visa allows eligible travellers to stay for up to 90 days in any 180 days, across the entire Schengen Area – not per country. So if you spend 20 days in France and 15 in Italy on the same trip, that’s 35 days off your 90-day limit, not two separate allowances.

Keep in mind that the terms Europe and Schengen Area do not refer to the same group of countries. The Schengen Area has 29 countries with common visa rules, while countries like the UK, Ireland, and Cyprus have separate visa requirements.

For Indian travellers, knowing this difference is the first step when planning a Europe visa for Indians.

What Documents Are Needed for a Schengen Visa?

Schengen Visa

This is usually the part that worries people the most, so here is the honest picture: your exact Schengen visa documents depend on which country you are applying to, why you are travelling, and your personal situation.

However, a tourism application generally requires documents that establish your identity, travel plans, financial situation and the purpose of your visit.

Common requirements include:

  • A valid passport and completed visa application.
  • Recent photographs and biometric information.
  • Your travel plan details and the reason for your trip.
  • Proof of accommodation.
  • Evidence that you have enough funds for the trip.
  • Supporting documents related to your employment, business, studies or other circumstances.
  • Valid travel medical insurance.
  • Additional documents that may be requested by the relevant consulate.

Travel medical insurance is also an important Schengen requirement. The policy should include cover for emergency medical care, hospital treatment, and repatriation if needed during your trip.

Quick Tip: Avoid submitting simple internet bank printouts without physical bank stamps. Unstamped financial statements or insurance policies that do not match your flight dates are very common reasons for visa delays!

When Should I Apply for a Schengen Visa?

You can file your application well before your planned departure date. Leaving your visa till the last minute is a risky game because appointment availability in India can get very tight.

A Schengen short-stay visa application can be submitted as early as six months before your planned trip, but make sure to apply at least 15 days before you leave. That is the general Schengen rule, but official guidance for some countries may set different minimum requirements in certain situations. Schengen visa applications normally take about 15 days to process, but cases involving extra checks or documents may take up to 45 days.

Start the visa process early so you have enough time to deal with any delays or missing documents. Appointment availability, document preparation, and extra requests from the consulate can all affect processing time.

Which Country Should I Apply to for a Schengen Visa?

Apply Schengen Visa

Now, this is crucial for you to know – If your Europe tour covers only one Schengen country, you generally need to apply through the consulate of that country.

But what if your trip to Europe includes several countries?

In that case, the country you should apply to depends on your itinerary and how long you plan to stay in each country.

Here’s how to find out where to apply:

Trip Type Where to Apply
Single-country trip Apply to the consulate or embassy of that country.
Multiple countries – different lengths of stay Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights (your main destination).
Multiple countries – same length of stay Submit your application through whichever country you enter first.

In simple terms, apply through the country that is your main destination – the country where you will spend the most time.

For example, if you spend 5 nights in Switzerland, 3 nights in Italy, and 3 in France, you should apply through Switzerland. Also remember this – If you spend an equal number of days in each country, apply through the country you enter first.

One important thing to remember: you do not automatically apply to the country where your flight lands. Apply through the country where you will spend the most time during your trip. Applying to the “easiest” or nearest embassy instead can cause problems if your actual travel plans don’t match your application.

How Do I Apply for a Schengen Visa from India?

Schengen Visa from India

While the exact process can vary by country, the basic Schengen visa application process usually involves these steps:

  • Check Where to Apply: If your trip covers multiple Schengen countries, identify your main destination based on your itinerary. This determines which country’s visa authority should handle your application.
  • Prepare Your Documents: Organise all the necessary paperwork, including your passport, application form, photos, travel plans, accommodation proof, financial documents, medical insurance, and any additional supporting documents.
  • Complete the Application: Fill in the visa application through the official system or portal specified by the relevant country. The process is not identical across all Schengen countries.
  • Book Your Appointment: Schedule an appointment at the authorized visa application centre or through the relevant embassy or consulate. For example, applicants in India applying for a French visa are directed to VFS Global centres.
  • Submit Documents and Biometrics: Attend the appointment in person where required, submit your documents, provide biometrics and pay the applicable visa and service fees.
  • Track the Application: After submission, the relevant visa authority will review your application. You can track its status through the appropriate application centre or system and collect your passport once a decision is made.

How Much Does a Schengen Visa Cost?

The total Europe visa fee for Indians has two main parts: the overall visa cost generally includes the official visa fee plus the service charge collected by the visa application centre.

The table below breaks down these costs by applicant category, including the official visa fee, approximate INR equivalent, and service fee.

Applicant Category Official Embassy Fee Approx. INR Equivalent* Service Fee (VFS/BLS)
Adults (12+ years) €90 ₹9,800 ₹1,900–₹3,100
Children (6–11 years) €45 ₹4,900 ₹1,900–₹3,100
Children (Under 6 years) Free (€0) ₹0

* The amount shown in Indian rupees is only an estimate and can change depending on the exchange rate applied by the consulate or visa centre.

Visa fees are generally not returned if your application is refused. This makes it important to check your documents carefully before submitting the application. Since visa charges may be updated, confirm the latest fee before you submit your application.

What Should Indian Travellers Know About Schengen Travel in 2026?

Schengen Travel

There are two important European travel developments Indian travellers should know about in 2026.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) started working fully in all Schengen countries on 10 April 2026. For eligible non-EU visitors on short stays, the system electronically registers entries, departures, and refusals of entry. The system also records biometric information such as fingerprints and facial images.

EES is a border-management system, not a new visa. So, do not confuse it with the Schengen visa application.

ETIAS

ETIAS, or the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026. It applies to visa-exempt travellers visiting participating European countries.

Indian passport holders generally need a standard short-stay Schengen visa to travel within the Schengen Area. As a result, Indian passport holders are not covered by the ETIAS travel authorisation requirement. You will continue to apply for a Schengen visa through the usual process, and ETIAS will not be an additional requirement.

How long can Indians stay in the Schengen Area?

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period, across the whole Schengen Area combined.

Can I visit multiple European countries on the same visa?
