Full day Uxmal and Kabah archaeological sites

Discover some of the highest representations of Mayan art and architecture on this 6-hour tour from Merida to the ruins of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Uxmal, and the large archaeological site of Kabah.First, drive 65 miles south to the pre-Hispanic town of Uxmal, which dates from between 700 and 1000 AD. Built on a layout revealing the Mayans knowledge of astronomy, tour the Pyramid of the Magician, Quadrangle of the Nuns, and Palace of the Governor to see why many consider Uxmal to be the high point of Mayan art.Continue to the ruins of Kabah, a Mayan archaeological site connected to the ruins of Uxmal by an 11-mile (18 kilometer) raised pedestrian causeway. The largest archaeological site in Puuc, after Uxmal, admire the hundreds of stone masks of the long-nosed rain god Chaac on the façade of the Palace of the Masks. The name "Kabah" or "Kabaah" is thought to come from the archaic Mayan for "Iron Fist,” and is mentioned in pre-Columbian Mayan chronicles. At one time, the site had a number of sculpted panels and lintels depicting scenes of warfare, most of which have now been moved to museums.

The name of Chichen Itza derives from the Mayan words “chi” (mouth), “chen” (well) and “itza” (the name of the town in this region), whereby translated it would be something like the Mouth of the Well of Itza.
