Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque, officially called Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is one of the most famous religious buildings in Istanbul. It was built between 1609 and 1616 by architect Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa, who was a student of the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. The Blue Mosque has six minarets. At that time, having six minarets caused controversy, leading Sultan Ahmed I to add another minaret to the Grand Mosque in Mecca. That story tells you more about this building than its tiles.

The Blue Mosque stands right across from Hagia Sophia and is still used as an active mosque while also welcoming visitors every day. It is one of the most popular places to see in Istanbul.
