History

The history of The Leela dates back to 1986 when Captain CP Krishnan Nair – founder of The Leela Hotels, at the age of 65 years, laid the foundation of The Leela Palaces, Hotels, and Resorts.

Mr. CP Nair had a diverse and extensive career that included being a regular citizen, a distinguished army officer, a textile exporter, and one of the world’s most known hoteliers.

Mr. CP Nair named the hotel chain after his wife. He had purchased eleven acres of land in Sahar village in Mumbai to construct The Leela Mumbai – his first hotel in 1986. It is one of the earliest premium hotels near Mumbai International Airport. He inaugurated the second Leela hotel in 1991 in Goa. Inspired by the Mysore Palace, a third property was launched in Bengaluru in 2001. By 2009, The Leela collection had grown to include two more properties in Udaipur and Gurgaon. Hotels in Delhi and Chennai fell in line.
