How to Reach Gangtok from Major Indian Cities?

How to Reach Gangtok

Gangtok has no airport or railway station of its own. Almost every traveller arrives via one of two gateways in West Bengal, and the choice between them depends on where you are coming from.

By Air: Fly to Bagdogra Airport (IXB). It is well-connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore.

By Rail: Reach New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station.

The Drive: From NJP/Bagdogra, it is a scenic 4–5 hour drive (130 km) to Gangtok, following the emerald-green Teesta River.

Tip: The drive is scenic, but it may feel long due to winding roads. Start early to avoid traffic and delays. Carry motion sickness tablets if you are prone to travel sickness.

Permits & Documents You Need for Sikkim

Sikkim Permits

For Gangtok and Darjeeling, basic travel does not require special permits for Indians.

However, for high-altitude areas like Tsomgo Lake and New Baba Mandir, you will have to take permits.

Common Mistakes to Avoid on Your First Trip to Sikkim

  • Carrying Aadhaar as your only ID for permits. Always carry your original Voter ID or Passport. Scanned copies on phones will not work at army checkpoints.
  • Underestimating Travel Time. 100 km in the mountains takes 4 hours, not 2. Do not over-schedule your days.
  • Not carrying enough passport-size photographs.
  • Planning to go to Nathula Pass on a Monday. Nathula Pass is closed to tourists every Monday without exception.
  • Skipping the early Tiger Hill start. Many travellers give up on the 4:00 AM departure and miss the sunrise.
  • Booking Sikkim tour packages at the last minute in peak season. October and April sell out fast, so booking late means higher prices and fewer hotel and flight options.
