Best Time to Visit Leh

Here is a simple guide to help you enjoy your holiday in Leh.

Peak Season: Mid-May to August

  • Weather:  This is the warmest time in Ladakh. Days are sunny and comfortable with temperatures ranging between 20°C to 30°C in June and 10°C to 20°C in July-August. Leh gets very little rain, but sometimes it comes in short, heavy bursts.
  • Crowds: This is the busiest time of the year. All hotels, camps, and cafes are fully operational, and popular spots like Pangong Lake can get crowded.
  • Costs: Higher prices for flights, hotels, and tour packages due to peak demand. Expect premium rates, particularly during the Hemis Festival and summer vacation months.
  • Best For: First-time visitors, families, and people who want pleasant weather for treks, rafting, and bike rides.
  • Tip: If travelling in July or August, carry waterproof shoes, a raincoat, and sunscreen. Book your Leh tour package at least 2-3 months in advance to secure the best deals and preferred hotels.

Shoulder Season: April to Early May & September to Mid-October

  • Weather: A transition period with crisp, cool air. April/May: Winter ends, and the weather improves; days feel warm, but nights are still chilly. Sept/Oct: Early winter sets in; temperatures drop (5°C to 20°C), and the landscape turns into stunning shades of golden and brown.
  • Crowds: Moderate crowds. April starts the season, and October slows it down, so it is less busy than the summer.
  • Costs: Moderate. You may find better deals on hotels than in peak summer, though flight prices remain standard.
  • Best For: People who want nice weather without too many tourists. Great for photographers, couples, and anyone who loves monastery festivals.
  • Tip: The Manali-Leh highway often closes by early October due to snow, so plan your exit via flight or the Srinagar route. Pack heavy woollens as nights drop close to freezing.

Off-Peak Season: Late October to March

  • Weather: Harsh and extreme. The region is covered in a thick blanket of snow. Temperatures plummet well below freezing, ranging from -5°C to -25°C.
  • Crowds: Very Low. Most hotels and restaurants shut down; only a few heated accommodations remain open.
  • Costs: Stays are affordable, but travel can be costly because there are limited options. Flights are the only way to reach there.
  • Best For: Good for adventure lovers, photographers, and people who like quiet places in winter.
  • Tip: Carry heavy woollens, thermals, and warm shoes. Not suitable for small kids or elderly people. Bring extra power banks as your phone battery drains quickly in cold weather. Book hotels with heaters.

How to Reach Leh from Major Indian Cities

Leh is well-connected by air, which is the most convenient option for many travellers. Reaching Leh with our Leh travel packages is easy with proper planning. Most people fly for comfort, while some choose road trips in summer for adventure.

By Air

Flying to Leh is the fastest and easiest. Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport has daily flights from many Indian cities. A few popular airlines that fly to Leh are Air India, Indigo, and SpiceJet. Flights operate only in the morning due to wind conditions. Book flights 2-3 months early for better prices. Morning flights give you great mountain views. Airlines usually include IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, and SpiceJet.

Flying is ideal for families, senior citizens, and those short on time. Early booking is strongly advised during peak season. Carry warm clothes in your handbag as Leh airport is cold even in summer. In winter, flights can be cancelled due to weather - always check before travelling.

By Road

Road travel to Leh is seasonal and adventurous.

Manali–Leh Highway opens roughly from mid-May to October and is popular for scenic drives. Takes 2 days with a night stay in Sarchu or Keylong. Roads are rough. This option is popular with bikers. Carry warm clothes, medicine, and cash. There are no ATMs on the way.

The Srinagar-Leh Highway is easier and equally beautiful. It is open from April to October. This route takes 2 days with a stop in Kargil. Better roads are good for families. Some areas need permits.

Tip: Rest one day in Manali/Srinagar before starting. Carry snacks, water, and first-aid. Fill fuel when you can. Book hotels early. Check road conditions first.

By Train

There is no direct train to Leh. Leh does not have a railway station. The nearest stations are Jammu Tawi (700 km away) or Pathankot (750 km). From there, you will need to take a bus or taxi to reach Leh via Srinagar. Train + road combinations are time-consuming and not ideal for short holidays.

We recommend the safest and most comfortable Leh tour packages based on your travel month, city of departure, and budget.

Top Places to Visit on Your Leh Trip

Leh is the hub for exploring the wider Ladakh region. Leh Ladakh is a beautiful place with natural sights, monasteries, and quiet villages.

Here are the unmissable spots included in most Flamingo Leh holiday packages.

Leh Palace

Built in the 1600s by King Sengge Namgyal, this nine-floor palace sits on a hill above Leh town. This 9-floor palace was home to the royal family. The top floors were royal living rooms. Bottom floors had stables and storage rooms. Made from mud, wood, sand, and stone, the palace stays cool in summer and warm in winter.

Inside, you will see old treasures and items from the past. But the best part is the rooftop view - you can see the Snow Mountains and the whole of Leh town spread out below. Today, Leh Palace is a must-visit place while enjoying a trip to Leh.

Shanti Stupa

This white Buddhist stupa is on a hill in Changspa and was built to spread world peace. Built as a symbol of world peace, it offers sweeping views at sunrise and sunset. Located above Leh town, it attracts many visitors for its religious value and amazing views. You can drive or climb the stairway that leads to the stupa.

This spot is a very peaceful place, perfect for meditation. Early morning visits offer magical sunrise views - the sun turns the mountains gold and pink. Evening visits are equally beautiful, with the stupa glowing under the stars. Opening time - 05:00 AM. Closing time - 09:00 PM.

Magnetic Hill

Located 30 km from Leh on the Leh-Kargil highway, Magnetic Hill is a fun natural wonder of Leh tour packages. Magnetic Hill is known for a strange effect where vehicles seem to move uphill on their own when left in neutral. It is an optical illusion. The downhill slope looks like an uphill climb because of the surrounding landscape and lack of a visible horizon.

Your car is actually rolling downhill, not up. May to September is the best time to visit Magnetic Hill for good weather and clear roads.

Hemis National Park

Hemis National Park is in eastern Ladakh and was established in 1981. It covers about 4,400 sq km and is named after the famous Hemis Monastery inside the park. Famous as the Snow Leopard Capital of India, this park is one of the best places in the world to spot this rare big cat. Best to visit with expert guides who know the park and follow all safety rules.

Besides snow leopards, you can see Tibetan wolves, red foxes, brown bears, blue sheep, marmots, and rare Tibetan antelopes. Bird lovers can spot golden eagles, vultures, partridges, and many high-altitude birds. You can enjoy trekking, camping, wildlife spotting, photography, and nearby monastery visits.

Diskit Monastery

Located over 10,000 feet high in Nubra Valley, Diskit Monastery is the largest and oldest Buddhist monastery in Ladakh. The main attraction is a massive 100-foot Maitreya Buddha statue in gold and red, symbolizing peace and protection, blessed by the Dalai Lama. Its whitewashed walls shine against the desert landscape like a pearl. Climb stone stairs to reach the hilltop prayer hall with stunning views of valleys, mountains, and the Shyok River below.

Inside, discover beautiful thangkas, murals, and frescoes showing Buddhist deities. The monastery has sacred Tibetan texts and offers peaceful morning prayer ceremonies with monks.

Timings: Opening time - 07:00 AM to 01:00 PM and 02:00 PM to 07:00 PM

Top Things to Do in Leh

Leh offers a mix of quiet adventures and peaceful lake time. These moments blend nature and culture, creating memorable trip to Leh.

Drive through Khardung La Pass

Driving the Khardung La Pass at 5,359 meters is the ultimate bucket-list experience. It is one of the highest motorable passes in the world, connecting Leh to beautiful Nubra Valley. From Leh, the drive takes about two hours, slowly climbing on narrow roads with prayer flags and small icy streams along the way.

At the top, you will find small cafés serving hot ginger tea, army camps with flags, and wide views of snow-covered mountains. The pass is open from May to October, but bad weather can close it at any time. Taking a photo at the signboard is a must-do moment for every traveller. Tip: Get acclimatized first and wear warm clothes.

River Rafting in the Zanskar River

If you love adventure, rafting on the Zanskar River is a great way to enjoy Leh tour packages. The Zanskar River is known for its deep valleys and clear blue-green water. It flows through canyons with exciting rapids and calm sections. The rapids range from Grade II to IV, making rafting suitable for beginners as well as experienced riders. You can go rafting from June to September when the water flow is good.

Going through the rapids, feeling the cold glacier water spray, and seeing the amazing rock formations around you is unforgettable. Zanskar river rafting is perfect for adventure lovers, photographers, and anyone who wants excitement mixed with beautiful nature.

Stroll through the Leh Market.

The pedestrian-only Main Bazaar is the heart of Leh. Located in the old town near Leh Palace, the market has narrow streets filled with shops and stalls selling everything from traditional Ladakhi crafts to modern hiking gear. Bargaining is common, and prices usually range from INR 500 to 2,000. Street food adds to the experience, with hot momos, apricot jam, and local snacks easily available.

You will notice the sound of bells, the smell of incense, and bright prayer flags everywhere. The market is great for buying gifts - Thangka paintings, singing bowls, prayer wheels, apricot jam, and traditional jewellery. The market closes by 8-9 PM, so plan your visit accordingly. This is a great mix of shopping, culture, and people-watching.

Enjoy the Peaceful Lakes

A trip to Leh is incomplete without visiting Pangong Tso (famous from the movie 3 Idiots). The high-altitude lakes are stunning - clear water reflecting mountains and changing skies. Pangong Tso, at 4,250m, stretches for 14km and changes colour from blue to green as the light shifts. It takes about five hours to reach from Leh, and nearby camps allow you to stay under starry skies. You can enjoy slow walks, picnics, or quiet time by the water.

Tso Moriri is less crowded but just as beautiful. It offers a more peaceful experience. This lake is a bird sanctuary with migratory birds like bar-headed geese and black-necked cranes. The best time to visit these lakes is from May to September when roads are open. Bring warm clothes as it can get very cold, even in summer.

Camel safari in Nubra Valley

A camel safari in Nubra Valley is a simple and memorable experience through cold desert dunes. You ride double-humped Bactrian camels that take you back to ancient trade route times. The 20-30 minute camel ride takes you across golden sand with cool desert wind and majestic mountain views. It is great for photos - camels against dunes, colorful local handlers, and the unique mix of desert and Snow Mountains.

Guides share local stories, and evening rides often end near sunset with music and small fires. Camel safaris run from May to September when the Nubra Valley is open. This camel safari is a must-do activity with your Leh trip and creates memories you will always remember.
