Summary: Khajjiar in Himachal Pradesh is a beautiful little mountain destination near Dalhousie. Often called the Mini Switzerland of India, Khajjiar is less about sightseeing and more about enjoying the landscape. In this blog, I cover where it is, how to reach it, what to see and do, the right season to go, and how to include Khajjiar in a Himachal holiday.
If you are wondering whether Khajjiar is really worth visiting, I would say yes, especially if you are already planning a trip to Dalhousie or Chamba in Himachal Pradesh.
This is not a place where you tick off ten attractions in a day. It is a wide green open area surrounded by deodar trees, with a small lake in the middle, an old wooden temple on one edge and the Dhauladhar Mountain range in the background.
And honestly, that is the charm of Khajjiar.
You can walk around the open grassy area, sit for some time, enjoy the views, click pictures or simply do nothing for a while. Many travellers find it peaceful compared to the busier hill stations, though the main meadow can get crowded later in the day.
If you want a peaceful, laid-back holiday in the mountains, not a rushed, sightseeing-heavy trip, Khajjiar is a great addition to your Himachal trip.

The Khajjiar location is in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, at an altitude of around 1,920 to 2,000 metres above sea level.
It’s about 22–23 km from Dalhousie and around 26 km from Chamba. The drive from Dalhousie usually takes about an hour, but since it is a mountain road, weather and traffic can slow things down a bit.
The name Khajjiar Mini Switzerland is not just a random tourism tagline.
On 7 July 1992, a senior Swiss diplomat visited and called the place “Mini Switzerland”. He put up a yellow Swiss hiking sign showing the distance to Bern, 6,194 km, and took a stone from Khajjiar back to Switzerland. Khajjiar is one of the few places in the world renowned for its landscapes that look similar to Switzerland.
So what actually feels like Switzerland?
It is a mix of lake, pasture and forest in one spot: a bowl-shaped meadow, tall deodars and snow-capped peaks behind. But do not visit Khajjiar expecting it like Switzerland in Himachal Pradesh.
The comparison is about the landscape, not about recreating the Swiss Alps. Khajjiar has its own character, and that is what makes it interesting.
Talking about the main places to see in Khajjiar, there are only a few that you really need to know.
The green open area is the heart of Khajjiar.
It has open grass, a walking track around the edge and deodar forest all around. Khajjiar Lake sits in the centre. This is the place where most visitors spend their time, whether they are walking around, taking photographs, enjoying horse rides, or simply sitting and taking in the scenery.
Just keep in mind that the lake may not be exactly what you expect.
Old photos and travel blogs often show this as a big, sparkling mountain lake. But that’s not really the case anymore. The lake is actually quite small, and how it looks can change a lot. Some recent visitors have also said that the area looks overgrown and is not very well maintained.
So, come for the meadow, forest and overall landscape, rather than visiting only for the lake. Being clear about what you actually want to see will help Khajjiar match up to what you are hoping for.
Located close to the grassland, Khajji Nag Temple is one of the important landmarks here.
This small wooden temple on the edge of the meadow dates to around the 12th century. It is dedicated to Khajji Nag, the serpent deity, and is named after him. Its wooden architecture and mountain setting add a cultural side to what is otherwise a very nature-focused destination.
It is a quick stop, but a nice place to see as you explore the main grassy area of Khajjiar.
If you are exploring this region, make some time for Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary too.
The sanctuary is full of tall deodar and fir trees, quiet walking trails, and Himalayan wildlife. It’s a great pick if you love forests and would rather take a peaceful walk than spend the whole day sightseeing.
It is better to see Kalatop as a nearby forest experience, rather than just another attraction in the main Khajjiar meadow.

The best things to do in Khajjiar are actually quite simple.
That’s really it. Spend some quiet time under the trees, walk around, and take pictures from different spots in the valley. Horse riding near the main meadow is popular too.
However, do not plan your trip to Khajjiar focused on adventure activities. These activities depend on the season and weather. The beautiful meadow, cedar trees and mountain views are what make Khajjiar special.
And if you ask me, one of the best things to do here is to simply slow down. You do not always need an activity to enjoy a place.

The best time to visit Khajjiar depends on what you want from your trip to Himachal Pradesh.
The meadow stays green, and the weather is comfortable for sightseeing, walks and outdoor activities. Road travel is also easier during these months. This is a good time for paragliding as well.
Khajjiar looks lovely with mist and greenery, and fewer crowds. But Chamba district gets landslides and road blocks often, so check road status and keep a spare day in your plan.
Winter is the best time if you want to see snow in Khajjiar. Snowfall is usually seen from December to February, but it depends on the weather and is not guaranteed on a particular date.
Khajjiar looks like a whole different place under snow. But heavy snow can also block roads and limit outdoor activities. If you are heading there in winter, pack warm clothes, keep your travel dates flexible, and check the weather and road conditions before you leave.

This is where I would keep your expectations realistic.
You do not necessarily need two or three full days just for Khajjiar.
For most travellers, Khajjiar works well as a half-day trip from Dalhousie. The core experience takes around two to three hours, and many visitors stop here on the way to Chamba.
Staying overnight makes more sense if you want to experience the place at a slower pace, especially when the day visitors have left. This is also why Khajjiar works so well as part of a larger Himachal itinerary.
That’s the better way to experience it.
Khajjiar fits naturally with Dalhousie, and depending on your route, it pairs well with Chamba or Dharamshala.
The roads are winding, and distances look small on the map but take time. Weather can also change your day. That is why Khajjiar works better as one stop in a planned Himachal trip than as a standalone plan.
If this is your first trip to Himachal, I’d suggest planning your whole Himachal trip together, rather than just visiting Khajjiar on its own. Khajjiar is quite small, so it works best as part of a bigger trip – not a destination by itself.
At Flamingo, our Himachal Pradesh Tour Packages are planned with comfortable travel, practical timings and enough buffer for mountain roads. With our Maharaj touring model and Jain-friendly meal options, vegetarian and Jain families can also travel comfortably without worrying about food on the way.
Khajjiar may not have a long list of sightseeing attractions, but that does not make it less interesting.
Enjoy the open grassy area, cedar forests, fresh mountain air and peaceful surroundings at your own pace.
For a longer Himachal holiday, you can add Khajjiar to your Dalhousie or Chamba trip. Explore Himachal Pradesh Tour Packages with Flamingo Travels and include Khajjiar in your itinerary.
Khajjiar is located in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, around 22-23 km from Dalhousie and about 26 km from Chamba.
It really depends on what you are looking for. Spring and summer bring lush green views and easy weather for sightseeing. If you’re hoping to see snow, winter is your best bet.

Khajjiar snowfall time is generally between late December and February. However, snowfall depends on the weather and is not guaranteed on specific dates.
Definitely, if you love nature, mountains, and calm surroundings. Khajjiar isn’t about ticking off a long list of attractions – it’s more about soaking in the meadows, forests, and peaceful vibe.
A half-day or full day is generally enough to explore the main Khajjiar area. You can also stay overnight if you want a slower and more relaxed experience.

Don’t miss Khajjiar Lake and the meadow around it. The Khajji Nag Temple is worth a visit too, and nearby Kalatop forest is great if you’re into wildlife and greenery.
Khajjiar was given the name “Mini Switzerland” in 1992 by Swiss envoy Willy P. Blazer. The name comes from its beautiful combination of green meadows, forests and mountain scenery.
