Switzerland is a dream trip for a lot of Indian travellers. Think gorgeous train rides, calm blue lakes, snowy mountains, and pretty little towns – there’s so much to see and do. But when planning a trip to Switzerland, one practical question often comes up: Should you buy train tickets separately, or would a travel pass make things easier?
That’s where the Swiss Travel Pass comes in. It’s an easy way to get around most of Switzerland, but it’s not always the cheapest option for every trip. Here’s what to know before deciding if it’s worth it for your Switzerland holiday.

The Swiss Travel Pass is a travel ticket for visitors who live outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein. It lets you travel as much as you want on eligible trains, buses, and boats across Switzerland for the number of consecutive days you choose.
This pass is especially helpful if you are visiting places like Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, Montreux, or other spots around the country.
The main benefits include:
If you are travelling from Zurich to Lucerne, then Interlaken, then Montreux – the pass makes all that travel a lot easier.
However, this does not mean all tourist attractions, cable cars, and mountain trains are free. Check the ticket prices for each place before planning your budget.

For adults, the regular Swiss Travel Pass price depends on the duration and travel class you choose. Your route does not change the price of the Swiss Travel Pass.
The table below shows the adult prices for the regular pass. As per the official travel-trade update, the 2026 prices will also apply in 2027. INR amounts are approximate conversions using CHF 1 = ₹115, based on the latest exchange rates. Actual charges may vary with exchange rates, payment fees, and the seller.
Yes. Travellers under 25 can buy the Swiss Travel Pass Youth, which offers a 30% discount on the regular adult fare.
Children under 6 can usually travel free on public transport. Children aged 6 to 15 can also travel free if they are travelling with at least one parent who has a valid pass and a free Swiss Family Card.
If kids are travelling without an eligible parent, different ticket rules may apply. Please check the rules before booking.
The Swiss Travel Pass Flex is a good choice if you are not travelling long distances every single day. Instead of using the pass on back-to-back days, you pick 3, 4, 6, 8, or 15 travel days to use within one month.
For example, say you want to spend a couple of days just exploring Lucerne or Interlaken without any long trips. You can skip using the pass those days and save it for when you’re actually traveling further.
Just keep in mind the Flex pass costs more than the regular one, so it’s worth checking your itinerary first to see which option actually works out better for you.

Pick the option that fits how you travel. Before you buy, think about where you are going, how many days you will be travelling, and how comfy you want your trip to be.
For example, if you are exploring Zurich, Lucerne and Interlaken on different days, the regular pass probably works best for you. But if you are planning to stay in Interlaken for three days and only take a few longer trips the rest of your trip, it’s worth comparing that against the Flex option.
You do not need to travel first class to enjoy Switzerland’s beautiful train journeys. Second class is comfortable for most travellers. Just compare the prices before spending extra on a first-class ticket.
Also, look into the Swiss Family Card before planning your transport budget. It can save families a lot when kids travel with their parents.

The Swiss Travel Pass can save you money if you plan to travel by train, use local transport, take boat rides and visit museums. But buying it just because you are visiting Switzerland does not mean you will save money.
The easy way to check is to add up the full fares of every train you plan to take. Look those up on the Swiss timetable (sbb.ch).
Consider this example.
You are planning a trip to Zurich, Lucerne and Interlaken, with visits to nearby places. You plan to travel by train on several days, take a boat ride and visit museums. In this case, buying a Swiss travel pass may be cheaper than paying for each ticket and activity separately.
If you are staying in one city for most of your trip and only taking one or two longer trips, buying single tickets might actually save you money. Before deciding, make a list of the places you want to visit and check the latest fares for each route. Also, include the cost of local transport, boat rides, and museum tickets in your budget.
The Swiss Travel Pass covers many trips across Switzerland, but not all mountain trips are free. Some mountain trains are included, while others offer discounts. Knowing which ones are covered can help you plan your travel budget better.
Seat reservations: Scenic trains like the Glacier Express and Bernina Express need a seat reservation, which is not included in the pass and gets no discount. The fee depends on the train and season. In summer, these seats fill up, so book early.
Some mountain trips: Mountain trips can be confusing because the rules are different for each route. Check the current fare for each excursion.
Switzerland is known for its beautiful train rides, and they can be one of the best parts of your trip. With this pass, you can travel on many popular scenic routes. Just keep in mind, some trains may need a seat reservation or an extra fee.
The Glacier Express takes you between Zermatt and St. Moritz, passing through stunning Alpine scenery, mountain valleys, and viaducts along the way. The Swiss Travel Pass covers eligible journeys, but you must book your seat separately. The seat reservation fee is extra and is not included in the pass price.
The Bernina Express is known for its mountain scenery and spectacular railway route. The pass covers eligible travel on the route, but panoramic coach reservations and any applicable supplements must be checked separately.
The GoldenPass Express Switzerland route connects the Montreux and Interlaken areas through beautiful countryside and mountain scenery. Your pass covers eligible journeys. Check if you need to reserve a seat before travelling, especially if you want a specific seat or plan to travel in premium class.
Lake Lucerne Boat Trips
A boat ride on Lake Lucerne is a great way to enjoy your visit. If you have a pass, most regular boat routes are already included, so you can easily add a cruise to your sightseeing plans.
Just remember to check a few things before you book a scenic trip – the route, travel class, whether you need a reservation, and if it runs all year or only in certain seasons. Also, having a pass doesn’t always mean you will get a seat on popular panoramic rides, so it’s smart to check ahead.

Kids under 6 travel free, no pass needed. Kids 6 to 15 travel free too, but you need to get the free Swiss Family Card, and a parent with a valid pass has to be travelling with them.
It covers eligible services across a large part of the Swiss transport network, including many scenic train routes. However, some journeys require separate reservations, supplements or additional tickets. Always check the specific route.
It depends on your travel plans. The Swiss Travel Pass allows unlimited travel on eligible services during its validity period. The Swiss Half Fare Card gives you discounts on eligible tickets. Compare the costs of your planned journeys to decide which is better for you.
